Rare Birds

I came to read this book after seeing the movie. Edward Riche has set his two novels on the east coast of Newfoundland. He writes with humor, and it is clear he loves this island.

Dave Purcell (played by William Hurt in the movie) used to work for the Newfoundland fisheries department, but now is proud owner of and chef extraordinaire at The Auk, a fine dining establishment just outside St. John's. Unfortunately, life is not going well for him. He’s drinking his way through his finest wines so the bankers won't get them when they foreclose.

Dave’s closest neighbor comes to the rescue with what he considers an ingenious foolproof idea to invent a rare bird sighting … hoping to have birders flock into the area, thereby filling the restaurant.

Russell Smith of The Globe and Mail said “Uproarious … Rare Birds is a farce that is particularly Newfoundland in its sense of humour, at once slapstick and satire … Comedy is replacing cod as the number one export of the Atlantic provinces.”

We saw this movie quite a while back. William Hurt was perfect in the role. I didn't realize it was a book, and now, of course, want to read it! Thanks so much. I am quite interested in Newfoundland, and learned how to pronounce it from listening to the CBC. :<) Did you read:

The Day The World Came To Town
9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland
by Jim Defede

I loved it.

Oh Nan, don't get me started on Newfoundland ... I'd never stop. But wait, I think I'll do a whole post about my love affair with Newfoundland/Labrador and some of my favorite books

I haven't read The Day The World Came to Town, but I will now ... thanks for tip ... I have seen a few very good CBC special coverage and docudramas though.

I wish we got CBC tv but we don't, and sadly the radio doesn't come in very well anymore either, but years ago, the wonder of my mornings was listening to Peter Gzowski on Morningside. I can't describe the feeling that program gave me. Are you a fan of the dear, dear Stuart McLean? We now have the podcast coming to our iTunes each week. I have some tapes and a couple books. My dad was born in Canada, and I think my heart is there. I look forward to your post on Newfoundland and Labrador.

Stuart McLean ... yaaa ... every Sunday Morning on CBC radio, one hour of Vinyl Cafe.

Dave and Morlee and the whole family and friends.

Lots of Vinyl Cafe books on the shelves in bookstores
